Godmother’s Grammar Guideline

Here’s a look at some of the ideas needed to master the magic of writing:

1.Parts of a Sentence

  • Subject
    • Simple subject ( noun/ pronoun )
    • Modifiers of simple subject
    • Adjective(s) - single word
    • Adjective phrases - prepositional, participial, infinitive
    • Adjective clauses- [ must have both a subject and verb ] begins with a relative pronoun : that, which, who, whom, whose
  • Predicate
    • Simple predicate ( verb or verb phrase)
    • Modifier(s) of the simple predicate
    • Adverb(s) - single word(s)
    • Adverb phrases - prepositional , participial, infinitive
    • Adverb clauses - [ must have both a subject and verb } begins with a subordinating conjunction

  • Noun
  • Pronoun

3. Kinds of Sentences

  • By Use:
    • Declarative - makes a statement
    • Imperative - makes a request or gives a command
    • Interrogative - asks a question
    • Exclamatory - states, commands, or asks ( with feeling or emotion )
  • By form or structure:
    • Simple (one independent clause - usually referred to as a sentence )
    • Compound ( two or more independent clauses that are joined / connected by a coordinating conjunction )
    • Complex (one independent clause with one or more dependent clauses )
    • Compound / Complex (two or more independent clause and one or more dependent clauses
